The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) has completed a Four (4) day trip in the South-East which started on Thursday 25th June, 2020- Sunday 28th June, 2020. This is part of the Commission’s monitoring function of the National Commission for Social Action ( NaCSA) Social Safety Net (SSN) across the country.
The Covid 19 Social Safety Net program is designed by the Government of Sierra Leone and the World Bank targeting poor people and persons with disabilities (PWD) nation wide with specific thresholds with data from Statistics Sierra Leone in all the Districts.
According to NaCSA, the SSN is a one year program targeting persons with disabilities as potential beneficiaries whereby a beneficiary can benefit through the Emergency COVID-19 Cash Transfer in which a beneficiary will receive a sum of Le 2,601,080.00 (Two Million Six Hundred and One Thousand, Eighty Leones) for a period of one year to help cushion the economic challenges faced by PWD amidst the Covid 19 pandemic.
Payments to beneficiaries will be made in phases, they will receive a Sum of Le 1,390,090.00 (One Million Three Hundred Thousand and Ninety Leones) every six months.
Being statistically conscious, targeted number of beneficiaries ranges from 258 for Bo District, 326 for Kenema District and 46 for Bonthe District.
Delving further into the dynamics of the program, NCPD Executive Secretary Saa Lamin Kortorquee stated that as an institution, they are practically following what Section 6 (f) of the Persons with Disability Act 2011 states. He therefore appreciated and applauded the Government of Sierra Leone for delivering on the expectations of the New Direction mantra.
The Executive Secretary Saa Kortorquee in his concluding courtesy thanked NaCSA for their supports in ensuring that the program becomes successful as expected.
During this visit, Persons with Disabilities who are potential beneficiaries lauded the timeliness of the program thereby thanking the President for what they refer to as a ‘talk and Do’ President and pleaded with him to increase the quota for PWDs in future projects.
