Mr. Brima Abdulai Sheriff
Brima Abdulai Sheriff serves as Commissioner of the National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD), where he leads national policy reform, institutional strengthening, and public advocacy to advance the rights, dignity, and full participation of persons with disabilities.
He is a respected leader, human rights defender, and strategic policy advocate with more than 20 years of experience advancing social justice, disability inclusion, and accountable governance across Sierra Leone and the wider region.
Brima has built a distinguished career in program development, governance, strategic planning, and high-level advocacy. Known for his clarity of thought, collaborative leadership, and ability to build strong alliances, he works closely with government ministries, development partners, civil society, traditional authorities, and grassroots communities. His work consistently centers on equity, inclusion, and amplifying marginalized voices.
A dynamic and solutions-driven professional, Brima’s expertise spans human rights, disability inclusion, social justice, WASH programming, humanitarian response, governance reform, and community mobilization. He is also skilled in research, evaluation, facilitation, policy development, and storytelling for social change. Over the years, he has led and supported major national and regional initiatives aimed at strengthening governance systems, enhancing institutional capacity, and deepening citizen engagement.
Brima is widely recognized for his strong communication skills, coalition-building ability, and leadership style rooted in dignity, fairness, and inclusion.
He has held some of the most influential human rights leadership roles in Sierra Leone and the African region. He served as Country Director of Amnesty International Sierra Leone and later became a member of Amnesty International’s global International Council, representing Africa at the highest decision-making level. He also served as Commissioner and Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone, providing strategic oversight on national human rights protection, accountability, and governance reform.
Brima has additionally worked with major international NGOs, including GOAL and CARE, where he contributed to community development, humanitarian response, social inclusion, and youth empowerment initiatives. These roles grounded him in grassroots mobilization while sharpening his capacity for national-level policy influence.
He has also provided high-level technical leadership and consultancy support to a wide network of national and international institutions, including the Nigerian Human Rights Commission; the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (Liberia); CARE Sierra Leone; Partners in Health; the National Council of Paramount Chiefs; Freetown City Council; HURIDAC; the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Mali, and Nigeria; and UNFPA’s UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNPRPD) in Sierra Leone.
Beyond policy and governance, Brima is a skilled filmmaker and communicator who uses documentaries and storytelling to humanize rights issues, strengthen civic engagement, and inspire social change.
He continues to serve on several boards and advisory platforms, contributing to national and regional discourse on human rights, inclusive governance, youth empowerment, and disability rights.
