The National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD) was established in 2012 as provided for in Section (2) of the Persons with Disability Act 2011.
The PWD Act 2011 itself is domesticated form of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and Article 33 provides that state parties should establish an implementing agency of the Convention.
The Act states thus “being an Act to establish the National Commission for Persons with disabilities, to prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities, achieve equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities and provide for other related matters”.
Mobilize and maintain data on persons with disabilities, provide adequate advise to the ministry for their and coordinate services in Sierra Leone for their rights and welfare.
Coordinate the implementation of community level projects on issues related to disability and put in place operational schemes and project for the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
