On 19 November 2025, the Chairman of the National Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD), Brima Abdulai Sheriff, and team members from the Commission paid a courtesy visit to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alpha Sesay.
The visit was to familiarize the Commission with the AG’s office and the laws on disability, and to focus on key challenges affecting Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
In his brief statement, NCPD’s Chairman, Brima Abdulai Sheriff, thanked the Attorney General for the warm welcome and commended the AG’s office for the ongoing review of the Persons with Disability Act, and appealed for more vigorous enforcement of the 2011 Act, noting that effective implementation remains a significant concern for the Commission.
He said the Commission wants to continue engaging with the AG’s Office on accessibility laws and to encourage the AG’s Office to be disability-inclusive. “We want you to use your office to ensure that all disability laws in the country are inclusive,” he stated.
He further revealed that the Commission is working with Sightsavers SL to advocate on the Marrakech Treaty and the Africa Disability Protocol and that it would be prudent for the Commission and the AG’s office to work together and for Sierra Leone to ratify the legal instruments.
He stressed that the Commission is currently underfunded and appealed to the Attorney General for assistance in securing financial support to continue advocacy and advance President Julius Maada Bio’s vision for inclusion.
In his response, the Attorney General assured NCPD of his utmost commitment to addressing issues affecting PWDs and emphasized that his office will develop policies to ensure the accessibility and full participation of PWDs in all sectors.
He further stated that efforts will be made to create a constitution that is disability friendly and encouraged the Commission to actively participate in the review of other legislative Acts to ensure they reflect the needs and rights of persons with disabilities.
He concluded by encouraging the Commission to gather comprehensive data on the vulnerability of PWDs to climate change and to design relevant programs to address these challenges.
