In a heartwarming ceremony, the Kono District Entertainment Network presented a special plaque and award to Brima Abdulai Sheriff, Chairman of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), at the Commission’s New England Ville office in Freetown on Monday, 28th July 2025.
The prestigious recognition celebrates Sheriff’s remarkable dedication to peacebuilding and national development across Sierra Leone, highlighting his transformative work that extends far beyond his official duties.
Presenting the award, Mohamed Macurley, Public Relations Officer, Kono District Entertainment Network, emphasized that Sheriff’s impact began long before his current role, “even before his appointment as chairman of the commission, he has been doing great work to promote women and persons with disabilities,” Macurley declared.
According to Macurley, the award represents the culmination of a rigorous selection process that occurs every two years, with awardees chosen through a fair voting system that recognizes genuine contributions to society.
In a unique blend of entertainment and social activism, Macurley presented an original song specifically created to combat violence against women and children. He added that the musical initiative demonstrates the network’s innovative approach to addressing critical social issues through creative expression.
He further requests the Chairman to support their drive to change the narrative of women, children and PWDs.
Visibly moved by the recognition, Chairman Sheriff expressed heartfelt gratitude for the honour while reaffirming his unwavering commitment to advancing progress and positively impacting the disability sector. He added that, with the help of his NCPD team, he would work in line with the president’s vision to change the narrative of persons with disabilities in the country.
The Chairman listened intently to the anti-violence song and offered valuable feedback that could enhance its impact, “adding women and children with disabilities to the lyrics will make it juicier and more appealing,” he advised.
He maintains that the magnitude of the work ahead requires the support of all. “The task ahead is huge, and the support of all will make it worthwhile,” he noted, emphasizing that transforming Sierra Leone’s approach to disability rights and social justice requires a collective effort from all sectors of society.
The collaboration between the Kono District Entertainment Network and the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities represents a promising model for how the creative industry and advocacy organizations can work together to drive social change.
